Adrian Couwenberg

Adrian Couwenberg – Candidate Councilor – Ward 4

My name is Adrian Couwenberg and I am running for the position of Councilor for Ward 4 in Norwich Township.  I am 53 years old and have resided in Ward 4 for all but 3 years when I lived in Otterville.

I have been married for 23 years and have 3 children who have all been involved with Norwich Minor Hockey, Norwich Figure Skating Club and Norwich Soccer.  I attended East Oxford Public School and Norwich District Secondary School, Go Knights!  I myself played all my minor hockey in Norwich and also played for the Norwich Jr C Merchants for 4 years.  Recently I have retired from CAMI Automotive with 30 years of service.  Agriculture is very important to me, I was raised on a veal, dairy and apple farm.  I continued with my love of farming by purchasing our own farm in 2002 and now operate a cash crop, hog and most recently poultry operation alongside a Custom Manure Spreading business.

2) With all the young students at Emily Stowe, Do you support a New High School?

Yes, I absolutely support a new high school, however this is not a decision of the township, it is a decision of the Thames Valley School Board.  We fought to keep the school open but unfortunately the numbers did not support it.  Given the population growth within Norwich, this is definitely something that should be revisited.  It was a disappointing decision at the time to have had our High School closed.

3) With hate crimes on the rise in Norwich, do you support a greater police presence in Norwich?

I would like to start off by saying I do believe Norwich is a safe place to live.   Unfortunately there have recently been issues that may warrant the expense of additional policing if proven to be cost effective.

4) With the increased traffic on HWY 59 through town.  Do you support traffic calming measures?

Implementing speed radar signs will assist with calming traffic speeds through town.

A school crosswalk would increase the safety of the kids getting to and from Emily Stowe.

Paving roads around Norwich would redirect traffic from Hwy 59 through town.

5) How would you support Merchants (stores and business) in town?

To assist in new startups, less red tape.  Support the Norwich BIA in their efforts to improve relationship between the Township and the Business owners.

6) Would you support merchants if they opened their establishments on Sunday?

I believe that if opening on Sunday is part of the Business Model of the Owner, they can.  Especially as it relates to Fuel, Food and Tourism.

7) Do you support the charter of rights and freedoms (I.e. race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family status, genetic characteristics, disability etc)?

As a Canadian I support all parts of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
